Program Description

Neoclassical façade, soaring vaulted ceilings and richly decorated altars - the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is one of Tenerife's most important religious landmarks. During your visit, you'll explore the cathedral's history, discover its architectural details and admire works of art that have formed part of the Canary Islands' religious heritage for centuries.

The history of the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna dates back to the 16th century, when the parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios was first built on this site. In 1819, the church became a cathedral, and in the early 20th century, the building was reconstructed. However, its distinctive Neoclassical façade was preserved and has been protected as a cultural heritage property since 1983.

Inside, you'll discover a Neo-Gothic interior featuring high ribbed vaults and an ambulatory surrounding the sanctuary. The spacious nave and intricate architectural details create an atmosphere that invites you to explore the history of this remarkable building.

One of the main highlights is the Baroque altarpiece of Our Lady of Remedies (Virgen de los Remedios), along with the pulpit made from Italian marble. During your visit, you'll also have the opportunity to explore the cathedral treasury, which houses valuable religious artworks and historical objects connected to the cathedral's past.

With the help of an audio guide, you'll learn about the most important events in the cathedral's history, discover more about its architecture and understand the significance of its artworks. Exploring at your own pace allows you to take a closer look at the details that interest you most.

The Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a place where Tenerife's history, art and religious traditions come together. A visit offers a fascinating insight into the island's cultural heritage and the cathedral's importance to the local community.
